Nestlé Australia modernizes Blayney puppy food site

Nestlé Australia will update its BlayneyArray, which manufactures Nestlé Purina PetCare food, at a cost of $90 million ($63.5 million). The announcement takes the overall investment to nearly $200 million ($141 million) over the past 10 years.

The upgrade will extend existing production areas and include installation of new equipment, allowing for increased production capacity and export growth.

Speaking the update, Andrew Devlin, head of the Nestlé Blayney plant, said Nestlé’s commitment to support local manufacturing.

“Nestlé is committed to making an investment in the continuous improvement of Blayney’s site, and this investment also points to the continuity of Blayney’s network as a whole,” he said. “The update is expected to take about 18 months. When completed, we will see an accumulation in the use of local ingredients as production increases.”

Currently, more than 80% of the raw fabrics used at the Blayney plant are obtained, adding meat and cereals.

Devlin continued: “Increasing production capacity will also allow us to increase our local and export volumes. The value of more than $45 million ($32 million) of puppy food came out of Blayney for export last year, and was added to Japan, New Zealand and Thailand.”

The Nestlé plant in Blayney began operations in 1989 and manufactures brands such as Proplan, Supercoat, Felix, Fancy Feast and Purina One.

In addition, Nestlé Purina plans to expand its operations in Pennsylvania, USA, by hiring 94 workers and adding new processing and packaging lines to its Hampden municipality in Cumberland County. Purina, which recently employs another 320 people in Mechanicsburg, also operates puppy food in Allentown and employs about 800 people in Pennsylvania.

Purina has committed to more than US$167 million in the project.
