A brown sow and 3 one-year-old children caught salmon on the south bank of the Kenai River on Thursday night, spotting suspicious fishermen downriver and a crowd of passers-by in the water.

Jeff Selinger, a regional wildlife management coordinator for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, said that brown bears, particularly females and young ones, use the area every year as salmon travel upstream.

“Generally speaking, we don’t see much activity in adult men in this area,” Selinger said. “More than that, sub-adults or bristles with offspring.”

On Thursday, the circle of bear relatives targeted their salmon-catching efforts on an elbow of the river, about a mile downstream from the Russian River ferry. The assistance of the fishermen was low in the occupied segment of the nearby river, however, it can be noted that several fishermen are located about 50 to 75 meters downriver. At one point, a fisherman hit the hull of an aluminum boat to scare away a puppy that passed the organization of six along the shore.
